Cezanne Knife Painting
Cezanne’s Landscapes
Saturday, May 11th, 2022 from 10:30-2:30 PM Course Description Cezanne formed the bridge between impressionism and cubism. He used planes of color and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. Picasso is said to have remarked that Cezanne "is the father of us all". In this workshop we will use flat brushes, palette knives and a methodical approach to explore Cezanne’s techniques for painting landscape. Brushes: Brushes: Synthetic brushes are fine for acrylics. They are generally less expensive and easier to care for than natural-hair brushes such as sable. Palette Knife Painting
Saturday, June 8, 2024 10AM-2:30 PM COURSE DECRIPTION Painting with a palette knife is a great way to loosen up your practice. In this workshop we will use three different approaches to your choice of subject. All require simplification and spontaneity. Palette knives, like brushes come different sizes and shapes. They can be handled intuitively and with a little practice and good examples can open up new possibilities on their own or in combination with brush work. Class size limited to 9 participants. Paul Klee (1879-1940), one of the great 19th century modernist painters had a preference for gouache and watercolor on paper. A master of whimsy, he allowed playful patterns to become compositions. In this workshop you will review basic color mixing, technique for gouache and watercolors as well as composition design based on repeating shapes. Each step will be demonstrated but everyone will be working from their own favorite shapes and colors. Questions?

Georgia O'Keefe, Nature and Symbol

Georgia O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was the second of seven children. By age 10, she had decided to become an artist. She is best known for her paintings of flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. In 2014, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was established in Santa Fe. In this workshop, we will be blending a vibrant pallet to produce abstracted shapes inspired by nature. Please see materials list, class size limited to 9 participants. Frida Kahlo Calderon (July1907 to July1954) was a Mexican magical realist. Her paintings have strong and unflinching autobiographical and symbolic content. Of her 143 known paintings 55 were self-portraits, often with animals. This one-day workshop is for painters who are interested in exploring the possibilities of portraiture mixed with a healthy dose symbolism. If you don’t have the skills for accurate portraiture consider using some collage elements. We will discuss composition, color mixing and the concepts of Power Animals, Duende and Magical Realism. Class size limited to 9 participants. Please see materials list.
